What is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper peptide that has become increasingly popular in conversations about skin health, healthy aging, tissue repair and peptide therapy.

You may already recognize it as an ingredient in copper peptide skincare products. It is also available through some healthcare providers as a compounded injectable treatment. While these forms use the same peptide, they work differently and are supported by different types of research.

Here’s what we currently know about GHK-Cu, why it continues to interest researchers and clinicians, and what to expect if you are considering treatment.

What Is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu is created when a small peptide called GHK binds to copper. GHK is made from three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine.

Both GHK and copper occur naturally in the body. Copper contributes to several important functions, including collagen formation, connective-tissue support, energy production and antioxidant activity.

As of August 2026, GHK-Cu is not an FDA-approved medication, but its regulatory review is continuing.

In May 2026, the FDA returned GHK-Cu for non-injectable use to Category 1, which includes bulk substances currently under evaluation for use in compounding. The FDA has also announced plans to bring GHK-Cu before its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee by February 2027 to consider its potential inclusion on the 503A Bulks List.

Injectable GHK-Cu is being evaluated separately. The upcoming committee review represents an important next step and could help establish a clearer regulatory path for compounded GHK-Cu as additional research and clinical experience become available.

What Does Compounded GHK-Cu Mean?

A compounded medication is prepared by a licensed pharmacy or qualified compounding facility based on a healthcare provider’s prescription. Unlike mass-produced medications, compounded treatments can be prepared in specific strengths or formulations based on an individual patient’s needs.
